Jota is remembered by Liverpool prior to their first Anfield match.

In their first game at Anfield following the late forward’s passing, Liverpool honoured Diogo Jota.

In July, the 28-year-old Portugal international and his 25-year-old brother, Andre Silva, perished in a car accident in Spain.

Monday’s doubleheader of preseason friendly between the Reds and Athletic Bilbao was scheduled at 17:00 and 20:00 BST.

Before the first game, Athletic president Jon Uriarte and Liverpool great Phil Thompson carried wreaths onto the field and placed them on the perimeter of the six-yard box.

‘Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was shown on billboards surrounding Anfield, and fans shouted songs about Jota.

Additionally, Reds fans displayed banners and flags in remembrance of their number 20, which the team retired this summer.

When both games were paused in the 20th minute, both teams of players, coaches, and spectators cheered.

After joining the Reds from Wolves in 2020, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 games, helping them win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

In his match program comments, Reds manager Arne Slot stated, “I know that you will want to pay your tributes before, during, and after the games, and I know that we will hear his song ringing out throughout the evening.”

“Everyone associated with the club has been going through a difficult period, but Diogo’s family, wife, kids, and friends have been particularly affected.

“The club will continue to provide them with all the support they can going forward, and we cannot fathom the suffering they have been through. No matter where we go, we will always have him in our hearts and minds.

“Diogo’s passing has had a big impact on us all, but what has been so important has been the love and care shown from the football world, and in particular of course the Liverpool FC community.”

On Sunday, the Reds take on Crystal Palace at Wembley in the Community Shield. On Friday, August 15, they host Bournemouth at Anfield to kick off the Premier League season.
