Omar Marmoush, Bernardo Silva, and Nico Gonzalez scored in Manchester City’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday, moving them up to third place in the standings and giving Kevin De Bruyne a victory in his farewell game at Etihad Stadium.
With one game left, City sits two points ahead of Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa in the fierce competition for a top-five finish and Champions League participation with 68 points.
Mateo Kovacic of City was sent off in the 67th minute, while Lewis Cook of the visitors was sent off in the 73rd, leaving both teams with 10 men at the end of the match.
After drifting forward and firing a scorching shot from 30 yards out that dropped just inside the top-left corner, Marmoush scored in the 14th minute.
Ilkay Gundogan cut the ball back for the Portuguese, who tucked it in at the near post to increase Silva’s advantage in the 38th minute. In the 89th minute, Gonzalez beat custodian Kepa Arrizabalaga with a long run and a whipping shot.
Just before the final whistle, Daniel Jebbison gave Bournemouth a response. After a remarkable ten-year career with City, captain De Bruyne played an emotional last game at Etihad Stadium, but the night belonged to him.
However, the Belgian had a spectacular first-half miss, grasping his head in shock after slamming Marmoush’s cross off the underside of the crossbar from close range.
When he was replaced in the 69th minute to a standing ovation, De Bruyne gave his teammates hugs. As a late substitution, midfielder Rodri made his first appearance in eight months.
